Friends
A Church for the City Devotional
When I think of friendship, I think about two distinct things; one is being able to just talk about anything and everything. Conversations about life and having fun and sharing experiences. Second is having someone there to be a sounding board of things that weigh on your heart.
Think of a phone call and you are telling your friend about an exciting thing that just happened to you and you go on and on not giving any opportunity for your friend to give a response then you just hang up. Are your prayers like that? We just call God up and check off our list of wants and needs then hang up. Try waiting for your Father in heaven to respond to you to talk to you conversationally, a give and take if you will.
I used to withhold talking to the Lord about things that bothered me, or disappointments. I thought it was best to just put on my big boy pants, suck it up and do what I was asked. So, I avoided having a heart to heart! You can still be obedient and honoring to the Lord by doing what is asked of you, but it is ok to dialog about those things that seem to be unfair and not quite what you thought it would be.
The psalmists knew how to have this kind of friendship, one of conversation, complaint and exaltation. If you want to learn to relate to God, add reading psalms every day to your devotions!
Psalm 142:2
I pour out my complaint before him; before him I tell my trouble.
Father, thanks for allowing me to have honest conversations about life with you. Teach me to wait on you patiently, as I listen for your voice.
