I Knew That

“A Church For The City Devotional”

When I was on my sabbatical doing a study on life purpose, the material started out talking about three important elements of discovering your life’s purpose: 1) your call, 2) things you would like to experience in life and, 3) that God cares for you personally!

That last point surprised me and began a process of personal discovery into my relationship with God! Now, I know that He cares for us personally. I have a relationship with Him, I hear from Him, I preach on the subject. But, in all honesty, I approached my relationship through the lens of my calling. I am called to be a pastor and so I am “suppose to” maintain and connection with Him and pursue Him. I seek Him for direction in my life and the life of our church. I pray for words, wisdom and vision. I’m “suppose to” hear from God, after all it’s my job. I carry a responsibility for these things. So, when I read that He cares for me personally, I was a bit surprised! It had nothing to do with what I DO for Him, but rather, who I am to Him personally. He wants me to BE in a relationship with Him.

So, I am on a road of learning to just simply listen and talk to my Father with no agenda attached. This can be difficult, and I have to remind myself of this regularly. I think the key is learning to become a friend and not just a servant!

Exodus 33:11 NIV84

The Lord would speak to Moses face to face, as a man speaks with his friend.

Good morning Lord! It is so good to talk to you today. I am so glad to be your kid. I am here with you to chat about my day and hear what you have to say. Teach me about the things that matter to you, as I share with you the things on my mind.
